Jackson James 2017
This Zinfandel, named for James Blanchard's firstborn son, was sourced from old vines found in the renowned region of the Dry Creek Valley. Aromas of raspberries and bramble combine with nutty flavors and hints of caramel. The strong finish has the unmistakable and unique flavor of maple syrup. This wine has the potential to age for years or would be perfect with dinner tonight. The nose reminds me of mulberry jam slathered on buttermilk biscuits.(Throw in a little plum preserve and just a hint of vanilla and we have a winner.) This wine is ready to taste. Zinfandel should sing on the palate. Not a heavy, tannic wine, it should have verve and vivacity on the tongue; fruit and acid doing a two-step and keeping time with a light-hearted touch. The Jackson James Zin does just that. This is a vibrant wine wanting to be paired with a range of items--a backstrap of venison with a huckleberry glaze or your grandmother's meatloaf with a rich tomato/marinara sauce. The list goes on and on... This is a versatile partner for many different cuisines. The fruit and acid balance allows it to shine with both complicated and/or simple fare. Zinfandel, when made properly, can be one of the, if not the most, versatile food wines on the planet. The Blanchard Family Jackson James 2016 Zinfandel is one of those wines.
