When Boston native Robert Smerling first fell in love with wine, he committed a great deal of time to exploring wines on the other side of the Atlantic. He traveled to famous wineries in France and Italy and drank the great wines of Europe.
Full of passion for the wine industry, he left his job as an investment banker on Wall Street in the early ‘90s and moved to California.
He founded Renwood Winery, named for his wife, Rene. After 19 years of making wine at Renwood, we were looking for a new challenge. My daughters wanted to open an urban winery, and I wanted a small, boutique winery where we could produce wines from the best vineyards. Cabana Winery was born in 2011, a family winery he runs with his wife and daughters. “The name Cabana came from “making wine is like a day at the beach, being from New England, where we don’t get many beach days.”
Today we produce award-winning wines from Napa and Lodi at our Urban Winery in Lodi.
Hours Mon - Fri By appointment, Saturday Noon to 5 pm. Closed Sundays.
